DBKL Roadshow, 9 November 2025

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)—together with the Public Works Department (JKR), Department of Mineral and Geoscience (JMG) and SlopeWatch—has been carrying out a roadshow on landslides and slope safety since 2024 to all 11 zones in its jurisdiction.

We’ll keep you posted on the next session that’s coming up in 2025.

SlopeWatch has engaged in numerous talks, briefings, treks, mediation sessions, seminars and conferences over the years. Here is just a sampling of some of the activities that we have done so far.

TEDxPetaling Street, “GRIT” (2025)

In October 2025, Eriko Motoyama was one of 17 speakers to present on the TEDxPetalingStreet stage. Following the theme of GRIT (“direction, endurance, and the choice to keep moving forward in the face of the unknown”), Eriko spoke about how hillside residents learn to live with and manage risks.

Committee for Construction Industry Standard Guidelines CIS 32 (2024)

SlopeWatch was part of the Technical Committee of the development of the Construction Industry Standard (CIS) Guidelines for CIS 32-2024 – Construction Industry Standard (CIS) for Landslide Vulnerability Assessment and Development of Risk Index for Critical Infrastructure

Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Program JPP SeDAR (2018-2024)

SlopeWatch conducted several sessions on slope safety in the SeDAR initiative under the JICA Partnership Program.  The program included hands-on activities and training-of-trainers sessions to community members for community-based disaster risk reduction for landslides and floods.

National Geoscience Conference SEADPRI UKM (2023)

A delegation from the 36th National Geoscience Conference (NGC) 2023 came to the Community DRR Resource Centre in Bukit Antarabangsa to have a dialogue with members of the community. Organized by the Geological Society of Malaysia and SEADPRI of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the session also included the launch of the MyBahaya app.

Community Talk at Bukit Bandaraya Community Centre (2018)

After a series of landslides, the Bukit Bandaraya Residents Association requested a briefing on slope monitoring.  The entire committee showed up at the briefing, indicating their dedication to slope safety.

Education Session and Walkabout with Penang Hills Watch (2018)

SlopeWatch conducted a 2-day education session and walkabout to several sites with another slope-related NGO, Penang Hills Watch. It is a citizen-oriented initiative under the Penang Forum (a coalition of NGOs in Penang) for residents to keep watch on hillside activities and galvanizing action to safeguard the forested hills of Penang.

Presentation to SMK Seri Hartamas (2013)

Following incidents of trees toppling from a nearby slope onto school grounds, the school management decided to hold an educational talk on slope safety to the schoolchildren. A total of 1,000 students attended and to date, one of them has become a geotechnical engineer.

Slope Program for Kampung Orang Asli under Kobe Japan Rotary Club (2015)

With funding from the Kobe Rotary Club and spearheaded by a volunteer scientist from Nippon Koei, SlopeWatch ran a series of slope programs with Kampung Orang Asli (Indigenous Village) Bukit Telaga, Raub; Kampung OA Sungai Miak; and Kampung OA Sungai Ruil

Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) (2014)

SATREPS was a project that saw the collaboration of Malaysian and Japanese universities and agencies. One of the aims that SATREPS sought to achieve was to research and develop efficient early warning systems to mitigate landslide and flood risks. SlopeWatch contributed with researchers to implement programs and solutions under the Landslide sector.

Construction Industry Development Board Slope Safety Seminar (2014)

CIDB and the Ministry of Housing, Local Authorities and Urban Well-Being, together with SlopeWatch, hosted the “Slope Management Seminar – Overcoming Challenges & The Way Forward” in May 2014.  It invited participants from the government, private and community sectors to discuss and identify a collaborative course of action towards better slope planning, designing, construction, monitoring, maintenance and enforcement.

CIDB’s Expert Standing Committee on Slope Safety (2014)

SlopeWatch was a member of the CIDB Standing Committee on Slope Safety, now the Expert Standing Committee on Slope Safety (ESCSS). It was a committee formed under the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in Malaysia to address issues related to slope management and hillslope development.

Nomination for the United Nations Office Disaster Risk Reduction Sasakawa Award (2014)

In 2014, SlopeWatch was nominated by Public Works Department Malaysia to the 2015 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction. Out of the initial batch of 88 nominations, SlopeWatch made it through to the long list of 33.

The Sasakawa Award recognises individuals and institutions that have made significant efforts to reduce disaster risks and to advocate for resilience.

Small Grants Program-Global Environment Facility (2012)

SlopeWatch received a grant from the Small Grants Program (SGP) under the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which is Co-founded by the World Bank Group, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the United Nations Development Programme.  Under this grant, SlopeWatch conducted community talks, workshops, media advertorials and a slope safety seminar.

Jungle trekking with Ampang Search and Rescue team (2010)

Following a number of reports by residents in Bukit Antarabangsa, SlopeWatch and the Search & Rescue Division of the Ampang Jaya District Police Headquarters conducted a jungle trek to investigate.  The steep and heavily vegetated trek, consisting of a team of 25 police officers and residents, provided an educational opportunity to observe the natural terrain and its condition.

Donation from Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (2009)

On February 5, 2009, under the auspices of Force of Nature (FON), the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) donated a fund to kickstart SlopeWatch (then part of COBARA). This was made possible through the efforts of Bukit Antarabangsa resident Jalaini Abu Hassan.

Case Management (2009 – present)

SlopeWatch has handled and processed 231 slope reports, which were compiled with residents who contacted SlopeWatch for assistance.  By having a formal report, residents were able to follow up with the local authorities on the status of the case so that they could be resolved in a timely manner.
